It was the 35th edition of the women's event, and the 44th edition of the men's event. It took place at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, from 6 to 12 January 2020 for the women, and from 13 to 18 January 2020 for the men.
The ASB Classic in Auckland is the only ATP event held in New Zealand and has taken place in Auckland since 1956. Played in the week prior to the Australian Open, the ATP World Tour 250 event is used by a number of top players as preparation for the year's first Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne. For 2020 the total prize money pool for the ATP side has reached a record $532,695 which is a 0.9% increase compared to last year.

Tournament organisers have confirmed today that the ASB Classic, traditionally held in the first two weeks of the calendar year, will not be going ahead in 2022 due to Covid-19 restrictions. Organisers have been working through a range of scenarios in hopes that a tournament would be possible in January, however due to immigration requirements for the over 250 athletes, officials and staff that would be required to travel to New Zealand for the event, a positive outcome was not possible.

The tournament is played annually at the ASB Tennis Centre, in Parnell. It is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour.
Tennis Auckland provides four public tennis facilities in Auckland at ASB Tennis Arena (managed by Next Generation Club), Scarbro Tennis Centre in Glen Innes, Nicholson Park in Mt Eden and Manukau Tennis Centre in Manukau. Tennis Auckland hosts two international tennis tournaments in January each year at ASB Tennis Arena; the ASB Classic featuring many of the world’s top men and women players.
